Support & Resistance — The Foundation of Price Action

Levels are the skeleton of every chart. Learn how to find real ones, ignore fake ones, and structure a trade around them.

Why levels work

Support and resistance aren't magic. They work because humans remember prices:

  • Late buyers who got stuck want their money back — they sell at breakeven (resistance).
  • Sellers who got out too early want to re-buy — they bid at their exit price (support).
  • Algorithms anchor to the same visible extremes.

Enough people acting at the same price = a level.

Finding levels that matter

  1. Start on the highest timeframe you care about. Weekly → daily → 4h.
  2. Mark obvious swing highs and lows. If you have to squint, it's not a level.
  3. Prefer zones over exact lines. Levels are ranges, not pixels.
  4. Check volume. High volume at a price = real conviction.
  5. Look for confluence. A level that lines up with a Fibonacci extension and an EMA 200 is much stronger than a lonely horizontal.

Polarity — the «role reversal»

When price breaks above a resistance and comes back to retest it, that old resistance often becomes new support. Same in reverse.

This «break and retest» is one of the cleanest setups in technical analysis:

  1. Price consolidates below resistance.
  2. Breakout on strong volume.
  3. Price retraces and tests the broken level.
  4. Bullish candlestick confirmation on the retest.
  5. Entry with stop below the level.

Dynamic levels

Not all support and resistance is horizontal.

  • Trendlines / channels — diagonal levels.
  • Moving averagesEMA 50 / 200 act as dynamic support in uptrends.
  • VWAP — intraday institutional anchor.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing 30 levels on one chart. Fewer is better.
  • Insisting on exact prices. Zones win.
  • Ignoring the higher timeframe because your setup is on the 5m.
  • No stop loss. Levels break — plan for it.

Practice

Open BTC weekly. Mark five levels you would defend with a stop. If you can't explain why each level matters, erase it. Repeat daily until the levels are obvious without tools.
