RSI in Practice — Beyond «70 Overbought, 30 Oversold»
Stop trading RSI like a textbook. Here is how professional traders actually use RSI — with trend filters, divergences and multi-timeframe confirmation.
The beginner's mistake
Beginners learn «RSI > 70 = sell, < 30 = buy». Then they short every overbought reading in a bull market and get run over.
RSI is a momentum oscillator, not an automatic signal. Context is everything.
Step 1 — Identify the regime
Use a trend filter. A common one:
- Price above rising EMA 200 → bullish regime.
- Price below falling EMA 200 → bearish regime.
Your RSI thresholds shift depending on the regime:
| Regime | Oversold floor | Overbought ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Bullish | 40–50 | 80–90 |
| Bearish | 10–20 | 50–60 |
| Range | 30 | 70 |
In a strong bull, RSI rarely dips below 40. That 40–50 zone becomes your buy-the-dip range.
Step 2 — Use the 50 line
The RSI centerline (50) is more useful than 30/70 once you think in trend terms.
- RSI holding above 50 on pullbacks → bullish momentum intact.
- RSI losing 50 decisively → bullish momentum broken.
Step 3 — Divergences
See Divergence for the full mechanics. In practice:
- Regular bearish divergence on RSI at cycle tops is historically reliable on the daily / weekly chart.
- On lower timeframes (15m, 1h) divergences are noisy — use them as alerts, not entries.
Step 4 — Multi-timeframe
Stack three timeframes. A common crypto stack:
- Weekly RSI — macro trend.
- Daily RSI — swing setups.
- 4h RSI — entry timing.
Trade in the direction of the higher timeframe, use the lower timeframe for entries.
Setup examples
Bull-market buy the dip
- Weekly RSI above 50, rising.
- Daily RSI pulls into 40–50.
- 4h RSI makes a hidden bullish divergence vs price.
- Entry on close above a micro resistance. Stop below the dip low.
Bear-market fade rally
- Weekly RSI below 50.
- Daily RSI rallies into 55–65 and rejects.
- Entry on break of micro support. Stop above the rejection high.
Where it all fits
RSI alone is a coin flip. RSI + trend filter + structure + volume is an edge. Use it with MACD for confirmation and Support / Resistance for location.
