XRPXRP
Enterprise payments rails with a fast, cheap base layer.
Payments-focused token used on the XRP Ledger for cross-border settlement.
What XRP is
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open blockchain launched in 2012 — older than Ethereum. It was designed from day one for payments, not smart contracts: fast 3–5 second settlement, fractions of a cent in fees, and a built-in decentralized exchange.
Why XRP is valuable
- Bridge currency — XRP is used to move value between fiat corridors in Ripple's ODL (On-Demand Liquidity) product.
- Enterprise distribution — Ripple has partnerships with banks, payment providers and central banks in multiple countries.
- Deep liquidity — XRP is one of the highest-volume assets globally, including fiat on-ramps in Asia.
How to think about XRP
XRP sits in a different market segment from BTC / ETH. It is narrative-sensitive to regulation and enterprise adoption:
| Driver | Effect |
|---|---|
| SEC / regulatory news | High sensitivity |
| ODL corridor volume | Direct utility signal |
| ETF filings | Spot XRP ETF applications are live in multiple jurisdictions |
| BTC direction | Lower beta than most alts, but still correlated |
| Escrow releases | Ripple releases 1B XRP/month from escrow, mostly relocked |
Risks and trade-offs
- Regulatory dependence — much of the XRP thesis lives or dies on US regulation and classification.
- Concentrated supply — Ripple still holds a significant portion of XRP in escrow. Monthly releases are transparent but create perceived overhang.
- No smart contracts at L1 (until the upcoming AMM and hooks upgrades) — less DeFi surface area than ETH or SOL.
- Validator centralization — UNL-based consensus is efficient but criticized as less decentralized than PoW/PoS.
What to watch on Exum
- XRP/BTC pair — isolates XRP-specific flows from general crypto beta
- Regulatory calendar — SEC appeals, ETF filings, international ETP launches
- On-chain DEX volume on XRPL — post-AMM upgrade activity
- Escrow unlock schedule — predictable monthly supply events
Frequently asked
What is the difference between XRP and Ripple?
XRP is the token on the XRP Ledger. Ripple is a private company that uses XRP inside some of its payment products (like ODL). The ledger itself is open and permissionless.
Is XRP a security?
In 2023 a US court ruled that XRP itself is not a security in secondary-market trades. Sales by Ripple to institutions were considered securities offerings. The debate continues in other jurisdictions.
Does XRP have mining or staking?
No. All 100B XRP were pre-mined at launch. The network is secured by a federated set of validators, not by PoW or PoS rewards.
